Financial Advisers and Compensation

When evaluating financial advisers you could potentially partner with, a key question to ask is "how are you compensated?" Human nature reveals that compensation drives adviser behavior.

A broker-advisor paid to sell products to generate commissions, will do just that to make a living. That's the business model. Brokers must constantly devote time to generating new sales so their compensation might continue.

A fee-only adviser is paid only by a direct fee agreed upon with the client. Often, this is a percentage of the assets managed by the adviser on behalf of the client. When a fee-only adviser grows and protects a client nest egg, they grow and protect their compensation. Client and Adviser motives are in alignment. Ongoing attention, communication, and a focus on minimizing costs and taxes are beneficial aspects of the fee-only model.
